5 Steps On How to Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolutions…

It is that time of year. It’s the time where we set our New Year’s resolutions. The most popular resolutions are always about exercise, health and lifestyle and saving money.  But many resolutions get broken by the first month actually some do not even get that far. Why is that? There are so many reasons, but instead of focusing on why it is not getting completed, lets give you tools on how to accomplish them.

So here are my top tips to complete your resolutions…

1. HAVE A CLEARLY DEFINED GOAL-

Yes you need to know what target you are trying to hit. If you don’t, how will you know that you hit it.  Once you get a clearly defined goal that you can MEASURE it (yes you need some way of measuring it so you know that you hit it), then write it down where you can see it every day. Better yet, put a picture up that reminds you about the target you are going to hit. Our brain works in pictures and visualization can really help and will bring stronger results.

2. HAVE A PLAN-

Now you have a goal that you can measure. Now you need to make a plan.. Most of the time a goal is a wish. For example, I want to lose 15 lbs.. that is a wish. You can not totally control the weight you lose each week, but you can control what you put into your mouth. Too often we may set a goal as to lose 3 lbs a week, but you don’t the 2nd week and you lose steam and stop. Make sure you make your plan as action steps that you can control. I can control how much water I drink a day, or how many minutes I exercise every day.. Have a plan and make it specific on things that you can control.

3. ACCOUNTABILITY –

Now you have a clearly defined goal, a plan, the next step is to get to an accountability group or partner. Someone how can hold you accountable to your plan. It makes all the difference in the world. You will think twice about doing something that is totally against the plan due to letting the other person or group down. It will make you stronger and better able to achieve your goals.

4. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP IF YOU TAKE A MISS STEP-

hey we take a miss step.. But don’t let that stop you from continuing down the path. DO NOT beat yourself up, it is okay. We are all our own journey. Maybe the goal was too lofty and you need to back off or you just broke down because you had a bad day.. Pick yourself up and get back on the train..  You can do.. Step in to your accountability to group and share what you did.. You will get so much encouragement that way.

5. UNREALISTIC GOALS-

Sometimes the goals are too lofty.. We bit off more than we can chew. Or the timeline just needs to move out a little more. I love telling this story. So often we get started and do not see results and then we stop. We try again and it still do not hit.. You are on this merry go round of total exhaustion and never get to where you want to go.

It is like pumping a well of water. You pump and pump and pump and you do not get anywhere so you stop. Your effort has to start all over again. You expend so much energy doing that. Instead, if you keep on pumping the pumping gets easier and easier and the momentum helps you to eventually get the water out of the well. Do not stop and start.. That is the worst thing you can do. Instead, just adjust your expectations or add more time to get to the goal you want to hit. Maybe you need more education or need to make some different changes.. Constantly assess what is working and not working and make adjustments as you go… But do not stop…
